3 Dead In Wrong-Way Crash On I-95
Connecticut State Police say three people were killed in a crash with a wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 in Old Lyme. The collision on Tuesday night near exit 70 shut the highway at about 10 p.m. It was reopened at about 3 a.m. Wednesday. The driver, who was headed north in the southbound lane, was airlifted to an area hospital. No other details were available Wednesday morning.
Bridgeport Lawmaker-To-Be Questioned Over Residency
The majority leader of the state House of Representatives has met with an incoming representative to discuss residency questions that arose following her arrest last week. The Connecticut Post reports that Christina Ayala, who is set to take her seat in the House next month, met with Majority Leader Brendan Sharkey. A spokesman for Sharkey said the issue of residency is a concern to the House Democratic leader. Ayala was arrested last week on breach of peace charges related to a domestic disturbance with her boyfriend at a residence she listed in court papers as hers. However, it's different from an apartment address on candidate forms. Ayala faces separate charges related to an alleged hit-and-run accident in August. She pleaded not guilty.
Murphy Pledges To Fight Heating Aid Cuts
New Britain residents told Congressman Chris Murphy they're worried about losing federal heating assistance if the "fiscal cliff" becomes reality. Murphy met with city residents and nonprofit group leaders Tuesday morning at local social services agency. He vowed to fight a looming $285 million cut to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program under the fiscal cliff, which is a series of automatic spending cuts and tax increases that will go into effect next month if Congress and the president don't act. Connecticut is set to get $79.5 million from the program this fiscal year, but would lose $5.6 million of it under the fiscal cliff. Nearly 120,000 households in the state use the heating program. Murphy believes a deal can be reached this month to avoid the fiscal cliff.
NY, 6 Other States Suing EPA Over Drilling Methane
New York and six other states plan to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over methane emissions from oil and gas drilling. Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman (SHNEYE'-dur-muhn) claims in a news release Tuesday that the EPA is violating the Clean Air Act by failing to address the emissions. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. Other major sources come from landfills and livestock. Howard Feldman, a spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute, says the lawsuit "makes no sense" since the EPA has already passed rules on methane emissions. Federal climate researchers say they haven't yet seen signs that increased drilling is affecting global methane levels, but they're worried about the threat. Schneiderman says Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont joined in sending a required 60-day notice to EPA.
Judge Grants Injunction Against HealthBridge
A federal judge in Connecticut has granted an injunction filed by the National Labor Relations Board that will temporarily halt an employer's implementation of a new contract at five nursing homes. About 600 workers at the nursing homes went on strike in July to protest what they said were labor concessions imposed by the company that owns the nursing homes, Parsippany, N.J.-based HealthBridge/Care One. The NLRB filed the injunction asking for the workers to be allowed to return to work and that the company provide for back pay and bargaining. The union that represents workers at the nursing homes in Milford, Westport, Stamford, Danbury and Newington declared victory with the judge's ruling Tuesday. Healthbridge spokeswoman Lisa Crutchfield said the company will review the decision and weigh its options.
Waterbury Man Shot During New Haven Robbery Attempt
A 28-year-old man has been shot in the chest following a robbery attempt by three men. Police say Frank Antonelli of Waterbury was shot around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday after he and his mother went to a local supermarket and found it closed. As they were driving away, Antonelli says three men, one with a handgun, came up to them on foot and tried to rob them. Antonelli is in stable condition at a local hospital. Police say they haven't identified any suspects.
Bridgeport Hospital Will Re-Dedicate Burn Center
Firefighters and utility company officials are scheduled to be among those attending the re-dedication of Bridgeport Hospital's burn treatment center. Wednesday morning's gathering will celebrate the completion of a yearlong, $1.5 million renovation to the only dedicated burn care facility in Connecticut. Crews added a new overnight suit for families, installed a new patient elevator, upgraded patient rooms and treatment areas, expanded staff work areas and built a new main entrance. The renovation was completed in September. The burn center treats about 200 inpatients and 800 outpatients from Connecticut and neighboring states each year. Tours of the upgraded facility will be given to guests at the ceremony.
Coast Guard Introduces New Warning Device
The U.S. Coast Guard is introducing use of a new warning device in Long Island Sound. Boaters who ignore instructions from the Coast Guard could find themselves on the other end of blasts from the signal device, which was designed for increased safety. The LA51 device is fired from a shotgun to produce noise and a flash. Authorities say its effects are more pronounced than a splash in the water caused by M16 tracer rounds. Capt. Joseph Vojvodich, commander of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, says crews have received training on the device. The Coast Guard is introducing the device more broadly after using it in migrant interdiction operations and counter-drug operations.
