A former Peace Corps volunteer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing young girls while serving in South Africa. Weapons Found In Car Of Brother Accused In Killing
Police say they found more weapons, including an assault rifle, in a car owned by a man they say gunned down his brother outside their family business in New Haven and fatally shot himself at his parents' Westport home. The New Haven Register reports that police recovered an assault rifle in the car of Daniel Shwisha, another handgun and ammunition. Police say they traced the car the 44-year-old Shwisha drove to his parents to a rental company and located his personal car parked nearby. His brother, 45-year-old Gordon Shwisha, was killed Monday after arriving at the family business, Electrix. Police say Daniel Shwisha was fired or otherwise forced out of the operation of the business and believed his parents took the elder son's side in the dispute.
Boy, 1, Injured In New Haven Shooting
Police say in New Haven say a 1-and-half-year-old boy has been injured in a shooting. Police said Tramire Miller was in the arms of his aunt on the front porch of his multi-family house Wednesday afternoon when he was shot in the abdomen. Police say the boy was rushed into surgery at a nearby hospital and as later transferred to a pediatric facility where he is reported to be out of danger. Investigators say they are pursuing leads including the possibility that the gunshots were fired from a dark-colored sedan as it drove through the neighborhood. Police say they don't know who was the target of the 2:30 p.m. shooting.
Father Of Ex-Cop Who Killed Boy Found Innocent
A former Windsor Locks police sergeant has been found innocent of hindering an investigation of his son in a fatal accident. Robert Koistinen had been charged with third-degree hindering prosecution. A Hartford Superior Court jury on Wednesday found Koistinen not guilty. He testified in his own defense last week that he distanced himself from the case as soon as he learned his son was involved in the crash. Michael Koistinen, also a police officer, is serving a five-year manslaughter sentence for the crash that killed 15-year-old bicyclist Henry Dang. Prosecutors said Michael Koistinen was intoxicated and speeding. Two officers who responded to the accident testified they didn't see Robert Koistinen, the shift commander that night, interfere or take his son away from the scene. The father and son were fired.

Prosecutors say he used internal accounting software to keep terminated employees on the payroll, then transferred the money to his personal accounts. He pleaded guilty in May to charges including wire fraud.
Murphy, McMahon To Meet In 2nd Debate In Connecticut Senate Race
Republican Linda McMahon and Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy are facing off in their second debate in Connecticut's close race for an open U.S. Senate seat. Thursday's hour-long event will be held at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, beginning at 7 p.m. It will air live on FOX CT, as well as some radio stations. It is sponsored by the Hartford Courant, FOX CT and the Connecticut Daily Newspaper Association. The two candidates sparred at a debate Sunday, accusing one another of lying about their records. They're vying for the seat held by the retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman. Murphy and McMahon are scheduled to participate in two more debates planned for Oct. 15 in New London and Oct. 18 in Hartford.
Connecticut Education Official Suspends All Pay Raises
A top education official says he's immediately suspending all pay raises for staff members pending a thorough review. Robert A. Kennedy, president of the Board of Regents for Higher Education for the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system, made the announcement on Wednesday, a day after admitting he made a mistake in awarding raises up to $48,000 to 21 staff members earlier this year without the approval or knowledge of an oversight board. Lewis J. Robinson, chairman of the board, also announced that a special committee will be created to "gather information to formulate the policies and procedures" to help the board make decisions regarding compensation and other administrative matters. The board's executive vice president, Michael Meotti, decided to forgo his $48,000 raise Tuesday as news organizations disclosed the increases.
Jackson Lab Won't Get Credit For UConn Jobs
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's office says a bio-science firm won't get credit for creating jobs funded by the University of Connecticut but linked to the company's planned Connecticut research facility. State Sen. Len Suzio, R-Meriden, had complained after Catherine Smith, the commissioner of the state Department of Economic and Community Development, informed him in an email that UConn jobs would count toward the 300 that The Jackson Laboratory had agreed to create in the state in exchange for $290 million in state aid. Andrew Doba, a spokesman for Malloy, on Wednesday initially defended the decision to count the UConn jobs toward the 300, but later said there had been a misunderstanding. He says the 10 faculty positions will be in addition to the 300 Jackson has agreed to provide.
