Bethel Man Fathered Child With Daughter

A 46-year-old Connecticut man and his 23-year-old daughter have been arrested on incest allegations after police say DNA tests showed he was the father of both the woman and her baby. An arrest warrant affidavit says George Sayers and Tiffany Hartford, of Bethel, were charged Monday with third-degree sexual assault. The warrant calls Hartford an aspiring porn star. The investigation began with a complaint by Hartford's former girlfriend. Police say the ex-girlfriend was upset that Sayers didn't get her permission before selling photos and videos of her and Hartford having sex. Sayers and Hartford also were charged with obscenity and conspiracy. Sayers and Hartford pleaded not guilty and are in jail.

Police Seeking Woman Who Robbed Connecticut Market

State police are searching for a woman who robbed a local produce market a gunpoint. Witnesses say the woman — 50-60 years old, about 4 feet, 11 inches tall and wearing a car coat and gloves — entered Dzen Market at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday and pulled a handgun from her pocketbook, demanding money. She took off in a small gray car with an undetermined amount of cash. An investigation is continuing.

Puerto Rico Independence Leader Returns Home

The former leader of a Puerto Rican militant group that has long fought for the island's independence has arrived home to finish serving a prison sentence. Dozens of supporters greeted Avelino Gonzalez Claudio at the airport Thursday. Gonzalez was arrested in Puerto Rico in 2008 for involvement in a $7 million robbery of a Wells Fargo armored depot in Connecticut in 1983. It was the biggest cash robbery in U.S. history at the time. Gonzalez was sentenced in 2010 to seven years in prison. For nearly two years he has been held at a federal prison in Ashland, Kentucky. Prison spokesman Brian Sparks says Gonzalez was cleared for placement in a residential re-entry center in Puerto Rico to help integrate him back into society.

Torrington Teens Suspected In Theft Of Jesus Figurine

Police say two teenagers are suspected of stealing a baby Jesus figurine from a nativity scene in Torrington and smashing it in some woods nearby. Workers discovered the figurine was missing last month when they went to retrieve the set from a shed for the Christmas Village display. Detective Todd Fador says the figure was found smashed against a rock. He told the Republican-American of Waterbury that it was a prank carried out by two teens and there was nothing symbolic involved in the theft. Authorities say the teens confessed and arrest warrants are being written for the two juveniles, whose names were not released. A replacement figurine was donated for the Christmas Village. Sunday is the opening day for the annual event.

New Fairfield Man Sentenced In $600,000 Fraud Scheme

Federal authorities say a Danbury-based investment adviser has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for defrauding investors of about $600,000 in a long-running Ponzi scheme. The U.S. Attorney's office said 64-year-old Stephen Blankenship of New Fairfield was sentenced Wednesday in Hartford to 41 months in prison for mail fraud and securities fraud. Most of the victims had been Blankenship's clients at registered broker-dealers and authorities say he persuaded them to withdraw money from other accounts and invest directly with him. He promised a higher rate of return and that the money would be invested in publicly-traded mutual funds or established securities. In fact, prosecutors said, Blankenship did not make any investments, using the money for personal expenses and to make payments to clients who asked for returns.

Murphy To Visit Veterans Home In Bridgeport

Connecticut's first community-based transitional housing facility for women veterans is getting a visit from Senator-elect Chris Murphy. Murphy is joining Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch for a tour of the city's Pfc. Nicholas A. Madaras Home on Friday. The home opened last year. It is named in honor of an Army soldier who was killed in combat in Iraq in September 2006. A spokesman for Murphy says the home is an important step to help female veterans and their families get back on their feet, and the Democrat wants to highlight the work being done by the home.
