The annual campus community kick-off celebration for Black History Month at Stony Brook University features guest speaker Dr. Shaun Harper. Dr. Shaun Harper is on the faculty in the Graduate School of Education, Africana Studies, and Gender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also is director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education, as well as co-founder of the Penn GSE Black Male Grad Prep Academy. Professor Harper maintains an active research agenda that examines race and gender in higher education, Black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement. He has published nine books and more than 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and other academic publications. The Black History Opening will highlight the theme Sankofa! The Revival and include cultural performances, student organization display tables, and light refreshments. Free admission. Open to members of the Stony Brook University community and their guests. Sponsored by the Office of the President, Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action, Office of the Provost (Undergraduate Education and Diversity Initiatives), Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, School of Professional Development, School of Social Welfare, Department of Africana Studies, Department of Technology and Society, Division of Campus Residences, Office of the Dean of Students, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Black History Month Committee, and the African Students Union.
