DR. TIMOTHY M. GREENRecipient, "2013 Outstanding Advocate for Science & Technology Award"The Science Museum of Long Island recently named Dr. Timothy Green as a recipient of a 2013 OUTSTANDING ADVOCATE FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARD.  Dr. Green will be honored on Wednesday, February 6th at the Westbury Manor for his outstanding contributions toward the advancement and education of science and technology.Please help support Dr. Green in his goal to raise a minimum of $1,000 for this important fundraiser.Proceeds support the Science Museum of Long Island's programs and services for the children and families of the region! A summary of Dr. Green's impressive list of accomplishments:Dr. Green (Tim) is the Cultural & Natural Resource Manager at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  Soon after his arrival at the Laboratory in 1999 he began working  with the Office of Educational Programs taking on undergraduate interns.  Over the years he has supported and mentored over 120 interns including high school students, undergraduates, graduates, and science teachers.  Many of his interns have gone on for advance degrees.  Tim has been twice honored as an “Outstanding Mentor” by the Department of Energy.  He has also been honored with a National Role Model - Mentor Award by Minority Access, Inc. for his support of minorities gaining experience in science.  He works with BNL’s Open Space Stewardship Program and the GREEN Institute to encourage local schools to adopt ‘open spaces’ and learn by doing hands-on science in the Long Island area.  He also works with the Central Pine Barrens Commission supporting their Science and Stewardship program and has encouraged and supported the Pine Barrens Twinning initiative with the Migliarino - San Rossore - Massaciuccoli Regional Park in Pisa, Italy where a primary component is science learning between schools in the two areas. Tim is a founding member of the Foundation for Ecological Research in the Northeast (FERN) and serves as the Chairman of FERN’s board of directors.  FERN’s mission focuses on scientific understanding of northeast ecosystems.  Through FERN’s efforts we have a better understanding of the function of the Central Pine Barren forests, from soil microbes to the overall health of the forests including several species inhabiting the forest. Tim is a Certified Wildlife Biologist through The Wildlife Society (TWS) and advocates for active involvement in the Society by student chapters by supporting and encouraging their attendance at state, regional, and national meetings where participants gain a broader knowledge of the science of Wildlife Management.  He was honored by TWS as a TWS Fellow for his dedicated efforts to the Society.Tim is an Eagle Scout and an active member of Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America where he works at multiple levels to help build tomorrow’s citizen leaders from today’s youth.  He recently joined Suffolk County Council, BSA’s executive board as vice-president for Venturing and is helping the Council establish the BSA’s new STEM NOVA program within the Council.  This new program encourages Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Ventures to learn about STEM carrier fields while experiencing the scouting program.The inaugural ADVOCATES FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARDS takes place on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, 6pm to 8pm, at Westbury Manor.  To register or for more information, call Tracey Gittere at (516) 222-0550 or TGittere@LegendaryEvents.net       Visit EventBrite.com for pricing.
